The Ancient Art of Hollow Dry-Lacquer: Preserving a Millennium-Old Craft

At Sutra & Silk, we take pride in offering authentic Buddhist and Taoist statues crafted using one of China's most revered traditional techniques: hollow dry-lacquer (脱胎漆器, Tuōtāi Qīqì). This intricate art form, recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, produces lightweight yet incredibly durable sculptures that can last for centuries.

What Is Hollow Dry-Lacquer?

Hollow dry-lacquer is a complex, multi-step process that dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). Unlike solid wood or bronze statues, hollow dry-lacquer sculptures are made by building up layers of hemp cloth, lacquer, and clay over a mold, which is later removed, leaving a lightweight yet sturdy hollow core.

The technique involves over 50 meticulous steps, including:
Mold-making – A clay or wood master model is carefully shaped.
Layering – Hemp cloth is saturated with raw lacquer and wrapped around the mold in multiple layers.
Drying & Carving – Each layer must cure naturally before being refined by hand.
Polychrome & Gilding – Mineral pigments and gold leaf are applied for vibrant, long-lasting colors.

The entire process can take 3 years or more for a single masterpiece.

Why Choose Hollow Dry-Lacquer Statues?

Lightweight Yet Durable – Unlike heavy wood or stone, these statues are easy to transport yet resistant to cracking.
Millennium-Resistant – Lacquer naturally repels insects, moisture, and decay, ensuring longevity.
Exquisite Detailing – The technique allows for intricate drapery folds and lifelike facial expressions.
Cultural Heritage – Each piece preserves a 1,300-year-old tradition passed down by master artisans.
