A contemporary reproduction of Erlang Shen — the three-eyed Daoist guardian deity, protector of warriors, engineers and great undertakings. Depicted in dynamic standing pose with detailed polychrome armor.
Built in heritage workshops through the hollow dry-lacquer (jiazhu) technique — a labour-intensive Intangible Cultural Heritage method of layering hemp cloth, raw lacquer and clay over a removable core.
A Note on Authenticity & Provenance
This sculpture is a contemporary studio reproduction, built in the 1,400-year hollow dry-lacquer (jiazhu) tradition — an East Asian Buddhist sculptural technique that uses layered hemp cloth, raw lacquer and clay over a removable core, producing a hollow, lightweight form. Each piece is built over months by master artisans in heritage workshops.
It is inspired by the iconography and proportions of Ming dynasty Daoist temple sculpture, but is not an antique or excavated artifact.
